MISSION & HISTORY.
The History of Rally Cross
Rallycross began in 1967 in the United Kingdom, combining the precision and endurance of rally racing with the excitement of circuit racing. It was first broadcast as a television spectacle to entertain motorsport fans during the off-season. The brainchild of Robert Reed, a producer at ITV, and created as a last-minute solution, rallycross debuted at Lydden Hill, blending gravel and asphalt in a closed-circuit format. It quickly gained popularity for its short, action-packed races featuring thrilling door-to-door battles.
The sport grew rapidly in Europe during the 1970s and 1980s, attracting top rally drivers and developing its unique identity with specially built cars boasting extreme power and agility. By the 1990s, rallycross had become an established motorsport, spreading beyond Europe to North America and later gaining global recognition with the advent of the FIA World Rallycross Championship in 2014.
Rallycross in Cape Town, the Western Cape, and South Africa
Rallycross made its way to South Africa in the late 20th century, fueled by the country's vibrant motorsport culture. The Western Cape, known for its picturesque landscapes and deep motorsport roots, embraced the sport with growing enthusiasm. Killarney International Raceway in Cape Town became a focal point for rallycross events, offering an ideal venue with its challenging mixed-surface layout and loyal fanbase.
Over time, rallycross evolved in South Africa, with local drivers and teams competing in various formats. Cape Town played a pivotal role in popularizing the sport, hosting high-profile events that showcased local talent while attracting international competitors. The introduction of the South African Rallycross Championship elevated the sport's profile, blending world-class competition with uniquely South African flair.
Today, rallycross in the Western Cape continues to grow, with exciting developments aimed at making it more accessible to participants and engaging for spectators. Local initiatives, such as Dirt Africa's push to establish a South African Rally Cross championship, aim to cement Cape Town's place as a rallycross hub and inspire a new generation of motorsport enthusiasts.
